A Novel Idea: A Bill to Force Congress to Read its Own Legislation
In the following editorial, IBD suggests that maybe there should be a bill that forces Congress to read its own legislation before casting a vote. As sensible as it would seem for our elected representatives to make sure that they know exactly what they are voting on, most read little or none of the bills, having their aides do the dirty work instead.
If they want the American taxpayers to fork over trillions of dollars for such abominations as the Stimulus (Porkulus) Bill, Cap and Trade and the Obamanocare fiasco, don’t you think the least they could do is read these bills? They could also place legal limitations on the maximal length that a bill can be (perhaps 20 – 30 pages versus over 1000 pages that has become a custom) which can should also help avert insertion of pork and unrelated stealth legislation. This combined with avoidance of arcane legalese would appropriately provide the average American an opportunity to read, comprehend and pass judgment on what is being contemplated.
Is that too much to ask of our representatives?
